एनटीपीसी का मुख्य काम तापविद्युत संयंत्रों का प्रौद्योगिकी, निर्माण एवं संचालन है। यह भारत एवं विदेश की विद्युत उत्पादक कम्पनियों को तकनीकी सलाह भी देती है। कंपनी की कुल स्थापित क्षमता, देश भर में स्थित १५ कोयला आधारित और ७ गैस आधारित संयंत्र के साथ, ३४१९४ मेगावाट (संयुक्त उद्यमों सहित) है। संयुक्त उपक्रम के तहत इसके ३ कोयला आधारित संयंत्र हैं और एक अन्य संयंत्र ईंधन के रूप में एलएनजी / नाफ्था का उपयोग करता है।
